I should've known you wrote this article Tinu! So articulate and you hit the nail on the head!!

Social media marketing can be done by creating an audience to market to....but you also have to realize that just because you have an "audience" that not all of them are buyers for what you're offering.

Twitter etiquette as taught by most people is to follow everyone who follows you. It doesn't take into consideration that maybe you do NOT have an interest in what the other person is talking about, promoting etc...

So, you may have a following of 10k people, but how many of them are the RIGHT target audience for what you're selling? As in the example in the article, a small percentage.

A good thought-provoking article Tinu!

Corrisa

Hi Corina,

It's curious that the people who seem to have the best expertise about social media are actually experts on other things that *encompass* social media. Even the term itself is archaic after just a few years - what Isn't social online anymore? What content can't be shared? discussed? commented on via some tool?

Thanks very much for commenting!

Hello Melissa,

Excellent point.

Tools are great, but just need to be used properly and on the right thing. You wouldn't use a hammer to fix a flat tire. And hammers don't work if you try to bang them into them, rather than using them to bang. (There's a dirty joke in there but I can't quite get to it.) I'd never say not to use tools at all - that's like me saying not to get an executive assistant to answer the phone or your email.

I really appreciate that you took the time to make a comment. Thank you.

I enjoyed your commentary and agree that there is no substitute for doing it yourself. I do know that many small biz owners are in overwhelm and looking for a way out. I encourage them to get up and active and learn each network before considering outsourcing as it is their voice, their message and their value that needs to be heard and they are likely the best at recognizing those who can bring them real value. That being shared, there are tools aplenty to save a bit of time and make it possible to incorporate social media into an existing marketing plan in a meaningful way.

Tinu,

Great informative post. There are so many companies out there that just think that if they set up a twitter account and get a bunch of others following then by essentially following everyone related to what they do and expect to get followed back and then just spam people through selling without adding any value to the mix in the form of real content. There are tons of social media so called experts that are selling people that all they have to do is this and they are going to make money. Good Luck with that!

Hi Alexa, and thank you.
You know, I wonder why folks rail against the idea that benefiting from social media is as easy as responding to people who are genuinely engaged, then engaging more people. Is it perceived as harder work than it is, maybe? Or could it be that it sounds too good to be true.

The comedian Dane Cook got a lot of his following from simple engagement, did you know that? He gave out his AIM handle and just talked to people from time to time. I read once that an executive at a meeting wanted to know more about his fan base or some metric about his marketability, so he just booted up his computer and signed in.

He was so overwhelmed with contacts that it froze the computer - and of course they gave him what he wanted. I need to remember where I read that...

Thank you so much for your comments. Hope we get to hustle together. ;)

Nice post, Tinu. I keep emphasizing to friends and clients that the easiest way to stake a competitive advantage is to simply respond to people who show a genuine interest. It always amazes me how few people to this and how differently (in a good way) you feel about someone who does respond. Simple, effective, but so underutilized.

Keep that hustle goin'...

Hi Ann,

Thank you. :) I work with companies on social media as well, and so many times they are just like, "well, here are the keys to the kingdom, let me know how it works out." And I want to shake them! On the one thing, I have so much empathy with how busy everyone is and how hard it is to work on making real connections to people. BUT it can take as little as 15 minutes a day AND it's so, So worth it.

I appreciate your comments so much.

Bravo!! I get SO many queries from clients who want to outsource the entire social media experience. They think they can just offload the whole thing like they offload web maintenance or advertising. I'm with you - you can't fake it. Educating clients about this is always an interesting ride. :)
