How Will You Eat That Elephant?

by Shonali Burke on July 1, 2010

Before anyone thinks I’m advocating cruelty to animals – I’m not.

The inspiration for this post came from this excellent read on how to eat an elephant. Again, no pachyderms are at risk here; it’s a great read on breaking down your large goals into manageable chunks, which increases your chance of success, and let’s you enjoy life along the way.

Here’s how I eat the elephant

Before leaving the office, I go through a mental checklist to make sure I have accomplished the goals I had for the day, and that I’m ready for tomorrow. Try it for a week and see if you aren’t more organized, better prepared and ready to take charge.

Before your turn off your computer for the evening:

  • Did you answer the emails that required a response and file the informational ones?
  • Did you update your calendar; what time is your first meeting tomorrow and are you ready for it?
  • Did you prepare your desk for tomorrow?
  • Did you do the one thing you absolutely had to do today?
  • Did you say “thank you” or give a co-worker a compliment?

If you feel like you’re struggling to keep up with everything that’s going on, try this. And let me know how it works for you – because it does work for me.
