Women Grow Business editor Shonali Burke will make her debut appearance at BlogWorld 2011, speaking on a panel on social media measurement.

I’m really looking forward to next week.

I know, it’s still a few days away, but the thing is that I will be heading up to New York City after three years (!) to attend my first-ever BlogWorld.

First. Evah! And I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I’m told it’s huge, so I suspect my head will be spinning after just a few hours of getting there.

If it wasn’t enough to be a first-time attendee, I’m also speaking on a measurement panel along with Johna Burke (apart from having the same last name, we also both love shoes, these are what I caught her in at PRSA a couple of years ago) and Margot Savell, which Heather is moderating.

We chatted last week about how we wanted to approach the panel and we decided:

1. No PowerPoint. I can’t think of anything more boring than a panel discussion with slides, that too, at a blogging conference.

2. We want the session to be really interactive and useful, so we set up a Twtpoll to try and get a sense of what you’d like to know about measurement.

Now, the title of our session is “Applied Social Media Measurement,” and I know that doesn’t really say very much. Originally, it had an addendum that was “beyond just fans and followers,” but I don’t know what happened to that part of it in the publishing of the schedule.

But that’s where we’d like to take this session – talk about real world measurement, case studies, etc. – not a lot of theory, but discussing what works, what doesn’t, what the kinds of things are that we still need to learn and think about.

It would really help us out if you could take the Twtpoll. It’s just one question – tell us what you’d want to know about social media and applied measurement, beyond just counting fans and followers.

If you’re attending #BWENY, I do hope you’ll come to the session (and please let me know, so that I can meet you!). Even if you’re not attending, though, it would really help us out, and maybe you’ll find your question answered when you follow along on Twitter.

Our session is on Thursday, May 26, from 10:15 – 11:15 am ET. I hope to see you there… and now please go answer that question, will you?

Last Monday, J-Lab i.e. The Institute for Interactive Journalism hosted the New Media Women Entrepreneurs 2009 Summit in downtown Washington, DC. The one day event brought together female panelists from diverse backgrounds in journalism to discuss how new forms of online journalism are emerging new entrepreneurial opportunities – and the steps you can take to cultivate them.

From savvy bloggers to entrepreneurship
Many of the panelists have had their own successes in transitioning from local bloggers, niche bloggers, and citizen journalists to full-fledged new media entrepreneurs just by being savvy online publishers.

Here are just a few of my takeaways from the summit including the keynote speaker from Placeblogger’s Lisa Williams:

It’s okay not to know everything, just start.

Include your personality in your site and take a personal approach.

But don’t let your personality be so engrained in your site that it could not function without you (be able to let go).

There are revenue models that work, often in combination (consider business models around ads, conferences, and content).

Don’t do anything for free that you wouldn’t do for free indefinitely.

The gist?
As the journalism landscape is rapidly changing, new media entrepreneurs see this as an opportunity, while traditional media outlets see it as a threat.

So whether you are exploring a career – in blogging, online community building, citizen reporting, aggregating, publishing, creative writing, or any other forms of interactive journalism – it’s absolutely possible in today’s online environment. There’s a career there if you carve it out!

Entrepreneur Magazine has listed The Startup Princess as a top resource for women entrepreneurs. And she’s been voted by her home state as one of 30 Women to Watch.

She’s that cool.

Kelly King Anderson aka Fairy Godmother of helping business-owner dreams come true … founded Startup Princess a while ago to convene like-minded women entrepreneurs as she was getting a business idea off the ground. Yet so much success emerged from Startup Princess itself, that she committed to building that instead, putting aside the original idea that first motivated Startup Princess to launch.

I randomly turned around last week at the Blogworld Expo. When Kelly mentioned “Hi, I’m Startup Princess on Twitter” – I almost jumped out of my skin from glee. It was the first time to meet her face to face.

-and a pleasure to get her entrepreneur magic apart of the SmallBizCool series.

So from Blogworld’s floor, here’s Kelly for SmallBizCool!

More from:

The full (and so cool) video series SmallBizCool at Women Grow Business;
